Sebastian

Ohio, County Naturalization Records. 1851.

Sebastian Haiss, older brother of my 3rd-great-grandmother Marianna Haiss, completed a declaration of intention to become a US citizen on 2 January 1851 in Hamilton County, Ohio. In the record above, Sebastian stated he was a native of Heckingen, a town quite close to Hausen im Killertal, which was the original home of the Haiss family.

The document also contains an important clue on the arrival of the family into the United States. Sebastian stated that he arrived from Le Havre, France into New Orleans on 20 December 1846. While I have not yet located an arrival record for Sebastian or his siblings, this does give a date range to explore further. He would have been 21 on arrival. So far, a search of passengers arriving into New Orleans between 14-31 December has not identified a match to Sebastian or any siblings.

Two weeks after completing the declaration of intention, Sebastian married Theresa Rentz in Cincinnati. The couple settled in Covington, Kenton County, Kentucky. In 1854, Sebastian purchased a lot in Covington from Joseph and Elizabeth Hock for $500. He purchased the neighboring lot from butcher William Ashbrook in 1858.

Sebastian may be the connection for how Marianna met Samuel Oyler. Both Sebastian and Samuel were butchers.

Sebastian's son Charles turned the butcher shop he inherited from his father into huge pork packing business. On his death in 1910, Charles was one of the wealthiest men in Covington.

Sebastian and Theresa had the following children:

  • Mary Hais
  • Barbara Ann Hais
  • Charles Hais
  • Josephine Hais
  • Emma Hais
