Around the World

St. Joseph News-Press, 26 Jan 1935

Mary and William's trip around the world in 1935 was featured in the local St. Joseph news. They left Missouri in late January 1935 for San Francisco, where they boarded the SS President Van Buren, a ship in the United States Line. Their return was covered in June 1935. Mary was 38 in the photo above, while William was 54.

The passenger list provides further detail on their journey. They departed from San Francisco on 1 February, arriving in Honolulu on the 8th. The ship arrived in Shanghai, China on 25 February, Manila on 4 March, Singapore on 9 March, and then Mary & William disembarked at Bombay (now Mumbai), India on 21 March 1935.

William sent an update from the trip while in Sri Lanka, describing a Rotary Club dinner in Penang, Malaysia.

When I started digging into the family of Pearl Cox Jones, I wasn't sure what I would uncover. I'm glad this search has revealed some photos of Mary Cox along with detail on her many travels. Perhaps she and Pearl resembled each other. More to follow.
