Earlier in the month I posted a photo of the headstone of Thomas Robert Jones and Sarah Ellen Armstrong in Montgomery County, Indiana. I am now catching up with more information on my 2nd-great-grandmother, Sarah Ellen Armstrong. She was the daughter of David Armstrong and Easter Vail, and was born on 7 December 1868 in Jefferson Township in Boone County, Indiana.
In the 1870 US Census, the family appears as:
In the 1880 US Census, Sarah was attending school in the county while her father ran the farm and tile manufacturing business.
Sarah married my 2nd-great-grandfather, Thomas Robert Jones, on 17 July 1887 in Lebanon, Boone County, Indiana.
In 1900, the Jones family lived in Jefferson Township, Boone County, Indiana in the household of Sarah's mother, Easter Vail Armstrong.
By the 1910 Census, Thomas Jones had become head of household, with Easter Armstrong living with them.
In the 1920 Census, Thomas and Sarah were living next door to Easter Armstrong (still in Jefferson Township, Boone County, Indiana). Their sons, Roy and Edgar, and their families, were living 6 houses away.
The 1930 Census is really interesting for several reasons. It states that Sarah was 19 at marriage, while Thomas Robert Jones was 27. Neither of them attended school, but they could read and write. Thomas was a farmer, and had not been a veteran in any war. My grandfather, Keith D Jones, son of Edgar Lawrence Jones, also appears in this census record.
Sarah Ellen Armstrong Jones died on 29 April 1940 in Thorntown, Boone County, Indiana. I am hoping to find Sarah in the 1940 Census.
