The Ghent Altarpiece

I'm writing this post early as I'm in Belgium this week for meetings with colleagues. Above is a portion of the famous Ghent Altarpiece, painted in 1432 by the Van Eyk brothers and on display at Saint Bavo's Cathedral. Sections of the altarpiece have been stolen seven times since its installation, most recently by the Nazis during World War II. The altarpiece was recovered in 1945 by the Monuments Men, which became the subject of a 2014 film directed by George Clooney.
