Photo by Patrick L Jones - Georgetown, C&O Canal |
In my first stint in Washington DC, between 2001-2006, I worked in an office on 30th Street, down from M Street in Georgetown. The
Chesapeake & Ohio Canal was located behind the building, with the historic canal boat ride right there.
The old boat deteriorated over the years and with budget cuts, the
National Park Service decided against saving it.
This is such a great photo, Patrick. It looks like the lock actually works. I love old, restored canal towns.
ReplyDeleteThe photo was taken in May 2010, and the locks do work. I understand NPS intends to replace the old boat with battery powered launch boats. The boat above was an 1870s mule-drawn replica. When the canal ride was in use they stationed the mules around the corner from a great bakery & coffee shop called Baked & Wired.
