County Fair Winner

While taking another look through Newspapers.com, I found some new-to-me entries on my 4th-great-grandfather John Muck. It looks like he had some winning entries in the Gibson County Fair back in 1873. He won for Irish potatoes and dried beans, as well as for blackberry cordial, blackberry wine, grape wine and currant wine.

This was an improvement over his 2nd-place finish for rhubarb wine in the 1870 Gibson County Fair.

It looks like I may not have covered John's story on the blog, although I have mentioned his wife, my 4th-great-grandmother, Ursula Fellme Muck. She made a quilt that is in the collection of the Indiana State Museum.

On approach

Photo by Patrick Jones. Downtown LA, 13 Nov 2018.
The shot above was taken as my flight was landing in Los Angeles on Tuesday. Out my window I saw the Hollywood Sign in the distance on the left, Downtown LA (on the right side of the photo), and a United flight in between.

Below is a shot of the new LA Rams stadium under construction in Inglewood, soon to be home to the Rams and Chargers, as well as NFL Studios, and the site of the Super Bowl in 2022. The iconic Forum is in the background.

Wildfire Relief

Photo by Patrick Jones. Guardian mural by Francisco Letelier in Santa Monica. 27 Sept 2017.
I'm heading back to LA soon for meetings at headquarters. Like last year, I am arriving back to another round of devastating wildfires. This is happening way too often. There are groups taking donations. You can donate to the Red Cross of Los Angeles, the United Way of Greater Los Angeles, the Humane Society of Ventura County, or see this article on the LAist for other groups accepting donations.

Armistice Day

Source: Detroit Free Press, 11 Nov 1928.
On this day 100 years ago, the Allies of World War I and Germany signed an armistice to end the fighting of the war. In the United States, this day is Veterans Day, to honor veterans both living and dead.

In our family we have many who served. My Dad, Allison's Dad, her grandfather, my grandfather, and many others. In World War I, we also had Vicente Campuzano Jr (son of my 2nd-great-grandfather), and on Allison's side Edward John Rech. There are others too. We honor their service.

Friday Photo - Dad, 1955-56

Photo by K.D. Jones of my Dad, about 1955 or 1956.
The photo above is part of a set taken by my Gumpy in the 1950s. I converted the photo in September from slides that were passed down to my Dad. This one is from a family vacation, but I am not certain where it was taken. Dad is clearly on a British flagged ship and it looks to be the summer. Maybe this is on the Great Lakes between the US and Canada.
