After the decision in Jefferson County Court, the case was appealed, and eventually made its way to the US Supreme Court in 1870 (see
Rankin v State, 78 US 380). I am not certain if a copy of Judge Swan's opinion referenced in the article still exists, but I am hoping it may be in Supreme Court files on the case.
