Jean Pierre

 

Bas-Rhin Archives. Birkenwald, 1823-1832, Births.

Picking up from yesterday's post, I am revisiting the family of Jean Pierre Halter. The Bas-Rhin Archives, tables of births between 1823-1832, show a number of births with the last name Halter. Not all of these children were descended from Jean Pierre, but many were. Given the new information about his three marriages and children with different wives, this post tries to unravel the web of family connections for the Halter family in Birkenwald.

As noted in July 2022, Jean Pierre Halter married Anne Marie Hamm on 27 April 1814 in Birkenwald. From looking at Bas-Rhin birth records, they had at least the following children:

• Francois Antoine Halter, 1814-1879
• Elisabeth Halter, 1818-
• Pierre Halter, 1820-1820
• Charles Halter, 1821-1824
• Marie Sophie Halter, 1824-1824
• Sophia Halter, 1825-1863
• Josephine Marie Antoinette Halter, 1826-1887

I previously had Jean Halter and George Joseph Halter as sons of Jean Pierre, but now I am not certain and I have not yet located birth records for them in the Bas-Rhin Archives online. I think there is still a close family connection, and they may still be sons of Jean, just not by Anne Marie Hamm. Anne Marie died on 12 June 1827 in Birkenwald. 

Jean Pierre next married Marie Anne Freiss on 27 Nov 1827.

Jean Pierre and Marie Anne Freiss had at least the following children:

• Marie Eve Halter, 1828-1831
• Joseph Halter, 1833-
• André Halter, 1835-
• Marie Anne Halter, 1837-1839

Marie Anne Freiss died on 11 March 1837, possibly from complications after childbirth.

Jean Pierre married for a third time, to Rosine Bauer, on 4 February 1839.

Jean Pierre and Rosine had at least the following children:

• Francois Antoine Halter, 1839-
• Hubert Halter, 1841-
• Catherine Halter, 1842-1846
• Marie Rose Halter, 1844-1845
• Marie Françoise Halter, 1846-
• Caroline Halter, 1849-
• Josephine Halter, 1852-

On first review, that's a lot of children, at least 18, possibly 20. Jean Pierre had two sons named Francois Antoine. Other siblings of Jean Pierre also gave their children similar names, so sorting out who belongs to who among all of these Halters is difficult.

At this point, I do not know if Jean Pierre and family moved from Birkenwald or remained in the area after 1852.

Looking back at the family of Allison's 5th-great-grandfather, Jean Pierre Halter, I found him in the Bas-Rhin Archives, with another family in the 1851 Census for Birkenwald. Jean Pierre married Rosine Bauer in Birkenwald on 4 February 1839.

In the record above, the household included the following other residents:

• Marcel Bauer, son of Rosine (18)
• Antoine Halter, son of Jean Pierre and Rosine (12)
• Hubert Halter, son of Jean Pierre and Rosine (10)
• Françoise Halter, daughter of Jean Pierre and Rosine (5)
• Marie Rose Halter, daughter of Jean Pierre and Rosine (2)
• Caroline Halter, daughter of Jean Pierre and Rosine (13 months)

Jean Pierre and Rosine also appear together in the 1846 Census in Birkenwald.

This appears to be his third wife, as there is another marriage recorded in 1827 with a Marie Anne Freiss. There's a bit more to unpack with Jean Pierre Halter and his sizable record of children in the Bas-Rhin region of France. I'll cover that in a subsequent post.

Above is a marriage record for my wife's 6th-great-grandparents, Francois Halter and Marie Elisabeth Sigrist on 26 November 1782 in Obernai, Bas-Rhin, France. I previously looked into French records on the Halter family back in July 2022.

The record is written in Latin, and includes the names for the parents of both Francois and Marie Elisabeth.

Wine in the Blue Ridge Mountains

Yesterday we made a trek out to Virginia Wine Country, with a stop at Cabela's for S to pick up a new fishing rod and gear. We stopped at Philip Carter Winery, a lovely spot off I-66 at the Markham exit. They have a couple of ponds, which S used to try out his new fishing equipment. We enjoyed a tasting, some live music and snacks.
